*How to Perform in the Veils & Visions Belly Dance Revue

Every year Ethnic Dance Expressions showcases the talents of their students and faculty in the Veils & Visions Belly Dance Revue.  EDE students and teachers perform solos and group numbers.  The Veils & Visions Revue provides students with the opportunity to perform in a theater setting and experience the thrill of stage lights, costumes, camaraderie and fun.

All performers must be registered for classes or must be instructors at EDE Studio.
(After all, we are showcasing  the talents of our students and faculty and their many months and years of hard work and training.)

As a participant, you must have good attendance during the months of May, June and July and you must be in class the weeks following the 4th of July weekend up to and including the Rehearsal on Friday, July 22.  This final rehearsal is mandatory and is held at EDE Studio from 7:00-9:30 pm.

There is a $25.00 Performance Fee to help offset the costs of extra practices, rehearsals, costuming sessions, etc.  You will receive a CD with music for the dances you will be performing.  If you decide to dance after this date, the fee is $35.00.

Dancers will need to submit a photo of themselves (head shot) and a bio about their interests for the Show Program.

I encourage students who feel they are ready, to create their own solo or a group dance.  The dance should be between 2 to 3 minutes long.  For advance dancers/teachers, it may be up to 5 minutes.  Everyone learns the easy finale dance that closes out our show, bringing all our dancers on stage to take their bows during the Certificate Presentation.

Most of the beginner/specialty costumes are provided except in situations when I don't have  the right size costume to lend.  Our dancers wear sandals or another type of tan dance shoe.  Advance dancers may need to have character shoes.  Beginners need a coined hip sash to wear with their costume.  Dancers will also need a push-up bra and opaque, bikini underwear that matches their costume color.  (This way, if anything slips, it won't be noticeable.)  All dancers who want to go out into the audience while in costume, need to wear a cover-up.  Everyone wears Cabaret Belly Dancing makeup appropriate for stage lighting.

We meet at the Cofrin Theater on Saturday around 1:00 pm to being setting up the stage, lobby and dressing rooms.  We stage dances, set the lighting and sound systems, check out the video cameras, and in general, get familiar with our surroundings for the performance that night.  We even practice dances at this time.  We come back around 5:45 pm to prepare for ticket sales, refreshments, and the show.

I realize that not everyone is ready for this step or even wants to dance, but there are other functions behind the scenes you can do to help up put on the show that will give you exposure to the experience without placing you in the limelight.  If nothing else, you need to support your classmates and teachers and attend the show. Your family and friends will be impressed by the quality of the show, the colorful costumes, and the talent and dedication of the performers.  As a student, you will come away inspired to dance at the next show.

Here are the 2011 Veils & Visions Revue Deadlines:

May 6:  Turn in your dance intent form or offer to assist with the show production.
